On September 7, 1996, nearly 25 years after the accident, the football jerseys of the eight young ballplayers, and a coaching jacket for their coach were formally retired at halftime of the Gunnison High School football game.
In honor of those we lost, the jersey numbers and coaching jacket are are now displayed in the Gunnison High School commons as a permanent tribute to those who died far too young. They remain our “Cowboys Forever”. In honor of those we lost,
The goals of The 1971 GHS Football Memorial Foundation, Inc. are to remember those who perished and to let their families know we will never forget these team members. We will strive to grant scholarships and bus safety awards to deserving recipients in honor and in memory of our fallen teammates. Please consider supporting us in this effort.
